First to prepare collections in advance and then present them to his clientele

First couturier to place an advertisement (in 1868)

First to sew a petersham label into a garment bearing his own name and not the wearer's - the first "designer label"

First to popularize the crinoline

Invented the bustle

First to use live mannequins

He caused the demise of the deep-brimmed bonnet

First to create rooms with different ambience to match the type of garment

Perhaps the first lifestyle designer, having introduced children's' wear, maternity wear, women's lingerie and consulted on interiors
